In reply to Michael Rous. I think you are referring to the V1 Doodle Bug that crashed in Chadwell Gardens and demolished several houses. I was 7 years old at the time and lived close by. I have no recollection of any V 2 crashing in that area.

In late summer 1944 I was 7 years old and was with friends in Chadwell Heath Lane when a lady screamed “Look a rocket “ and looking up we saw a long trail of black smoke accompanied by a brilliant flash and an ear shattering bang.
A rocket had exploded during its descent and we could see the remains hurtling earthwards finally crashing into a field about a mile away. Several minutes later we arrived at the scene where the wreckage was still burning and much to our dismay
no souvenirs were possible or available.
For once there was absolutely no damage apart from a small crater and some burnt grass.

In reply to Ruth Murgatroyd. I have just seen your post of Oct 2020 re the Lemna Road V2. It was late 1944 or early 1945. I have a vague memory that it was in the early morning of a week day. Among the victims was a young lad who attended Leyton County High School in Essex Road who was getting ready to leave for school. When I entered that school in 1947 I remember there was a framed photograph of him as a memorial on the top corridor.. He was the only pupil of the school to be a victim of the bombing 1939-45. Bexleyheath, March 1945. V2 landing.
I was then 8/9 years old and had been visiting a friend. My home was in Cranbrook Road. I remember the compression in the air and started to run home, but was blown over, which was fortunate, as the roof-tiles of a house a few doors “up” from home showered down over me, and I was only covered in dust and small shards. Our house had the tiles rearranged, and a couple of windows blown in, I seem to remember that the bomb had scored a direct hit on a TB hospice, and those killed were patients and one nurse. I was around 300 metres from the actual hit, just behind Bedonwell Road, but there were three rows of houses between!

My mum lived at 16 King Edward Road Leyton at the time the V1 bombing. I really want to know more about it. davemack1966@icloud.com if someone can tell me more. My mums name was Gladys Gibson

Subject v2 rocket attacks essex 1944/1945

dear sir/madam
in 1944/1945 my mother was living in elm dean house basildon essex the house and nearby rectory were badly damaged when 2 v2 rockets fell nearby within 2 weeks of each have any of your members or correspondents any information regarding these attacks any information would be much appreciated

A V2 rocket landed in Parmiter Street, Bethnal Green…on 7th February 1945..I was 6 at the time and at Mowlem Street School..I remember the windows being blasted in and my house being bombed..My niece was killed in this raid and my Dad who was Mayor of Bethnal Green at this time was brought home from work to find his granddaughter had been killed and my Mum in Bethnal Green Hospital…Does anyone else now anything else about this?….

My Mother survived the Lemna Rd V2 rocket. Her parents and brother were killed. Her father was the Methodist Minister at the (old) Methodist church on the High Rd. I’d be interested to know if anyone remembers htis event 10/2/45 or has photos of Lemna Rd pre or post blast.

I lived at 67 Recreation Avenue, Harold Wood. Born in 1939, I did not attend Harold Wood County Primary School until later in the war. I remember Pop Gay, the headmaster, Fungus Face Farrier and the lovely Miss Williams. The windows of our house were blown in by an aerial mine but I was too young to remember it. I do remember that Ardleigh Green school was hit by a V2 but the only damage to Harold Wood Primary was a piece of gutter from the headmaster’s study being damaged. I saw a thick glass rectangular object with pieces of pipe attached and this , they said, was from the rocket. A friend and I were in the Recreation Ground at the rear of our house when we saw a V1 flying overhead. My first recollection of life was when my mother took me to the shed in the Recreation Ground which housed the local supply of gas masks. The man produced a Mickey Mouse gas mask and attempted to put it on my head. I recall screaming continuously until my mother and the man gave up.
