I Patricia Pearmain lived at no 2 Petergate with my brother Eric. I was just 8yrs old and Eric 6yrs old. We were playing upstairs, and our mother was cleaning downstairs. Suddenly everything went black, and the smell of soot was over powering. The men came up the damaged stairs to rescue us. We were uninjured, but our mother had to be dug out , the front of the house had fallen in on her. She carried the scars on her face for the rest of her life. We were picked up by a taxi, and toured the hospitals until Bollingbroke Hospital took us in.

I have only just seen your comment.
Mrs Rolt, who was known as Helen, survived the blast and then left us standing in the middle of the road and went back indoors. She was struck by a piece of masonry. I was told it was an upstairs window sill. Fortunately, I did not see it. I was standing amongst people. The was a lot of noise, shouts and confusion going on at the time. She lived 3 doors up from me so was a familiar sight, her grey hair in curlers, wearing an apron, and no dentures in. It's sad that she was the only fatality on our side of the road.

My grandmother Rose Rolt was one of the victims of the bombing. I have been told that she went into the house to fetch the cat as the bomb went off, killing her at the age of 44. My father, Herbert Rolt Jr, saw it happen.
