She was in the basement, in the kitchen at 79 years old. She lived a further 10 .5 years. My cousin was in the top floor and fell to the basement. Protection from fallen rafters saved his life, but he suffered problems with his back. He died in 1991. My, previously deceased grand- father had stabling for local traders. The horses did not survive. When the fire brigade arrived, my uncle (Allan Humpries) arrived, being a fireman. Later, a cousin (John Bowles) was part of the domolition squad.

A warden shouted to them “take cover boys — it’s a new secret weapon” – that was the first V2 they heard. My grandfather worked for Woolwich Arsenal, so they lived near there.

My paternal grandmother was Lily Emily Knowlton who lived at #36 Grovedale Road. She was killed by debris from this V2. My Grandfather , Arthur Knowlton was still at work despite it being a Sunday.
Across the road at #33 lived the Hamilton family and Frank and his daughter Maureen were killed in the blast. His widow Violet was pulled from the debris after aperiod of some days and survived into the mid 1970’s. Their son, also Frank, was a POW in Italy at the time and came home after his liberation to find his family decimated.
My Grandfather Arthur Knowlton married Violet Hamilton some years later and to us growing kids she was always known as Auntie Vi. A very strict and stern woman but not surprising really.
My Mother, Lilian Ray, nee Knowlton, declined to visit her mother that Sunday as she was 36 weeks pregnant and feeling unwell ! My sister born in Dec.1944 was named Lily Emily in her Grandmothers memory.

I recently read the article about ‘Hitlers Guy Fawkes Surprise’ which show the memorial plaques unveiled in 2021. It shows Lily Knowlton as being aged 6 whereas she was 64. Who can be contacted to correct this?
