The date of the first V2 – behind the council houses in New Road- is confirmed as shortly after 9:00 pm on 5th February 1945 and the Highbridge Street V2 was Wednesday 7th March at around 5:00 pm – (reference E. J. Carter, The Diary of an Air Raid Warden, Published by Waltham Abbey Historical Society2nd edition 2009)

Sometime in early 1945 a V2 (it was said) landed on greenhouses between Honey Lane and New Road (in 1949 renamed Upshire Road) Waltham Abbey. Its point of detonation, I have always believed, was quite close to what is now 52 to 60 Upshire Road. I was nearly eight, and in bed, my older brother was fourteen and sitting by our french door when it was blasted open together with the removal of just about all the windows in the house and probably tiles from the roof etc. Its my impression that there were no deaths. Does anyone remember this incident. Another V2 fell in Highbridge Street, a few hundred yards from the Abbey Church, around the same time with several people killed, but that was documented in the local newspaper.

In reply to Robert Cotgrove. Not sure if you will see this but I've only just come across your post. The v2 you mentioned hit my father's house . He is still alive 16/08/24 he and his mother were buried in there shelter but rescued later by my grandfather. If you do see this please feel free to get in touch

In reply to Ron Behar. I refer to incident no1072 21/03/1945 which is listed as the location being Stanstead ( Suffolk). I think this should be Stansfield ( Suffolk) nearby .I was told by a friend who lived very nearby that the V2 fell in Black Wood ,being a remote location no damage was done or anyone injured .I would be very interested if anyone could confirm this .

In reply to Margaret Thompson. My mothers cousins Gordon and Mavis died in this hit, along with their mother Elizabeth and her sister Rosetta, but I thought her husband Leonard also died but I can’t find any reference to him. They lived at 48 Tewksbury terrace.

Your reference 964 is the attack on Smithfields Market (corner of Charterhouse Street and Farringdon Road).

In reply to Martin Watts. My grandfather’s sister and her husband were killed by V2 at 4.53am on September 14th at 14 Farnan Avenue at Walthamstow. I’m trying to find out where this bomb actually landed. About 3 or 4 other people were also killed in the same street.

I am typing up a WWII Diary, and the author records, for Tuesday 12 September 1944: Awakened this morning by a very heavy explosion with reverberations – nothing to see when I left the shelter. When I got to Town learned there had been 3, at 6.15 a.m., 8.15 a.m. and 8.45 a.m. Ours proved to be on the Chrysler Works at Kew. Apparently they are rocket shells, one hears nothing until the explosion, but there is a rushing sound afterwards.'
